Plate load testing
Vertical settlement and strength properties of soil and rock masses measured in place, by recording load against settlement as a rigid plate presses on the ground.
Method
Load against settlement.
The plate loading test determines the vertical settlement and strength properties of soil and rock masses in situ. A rigid plate loads the ground and we record the load and the corresponding settlement at each increment.
Tests are carried out on a thoroughly levelled ground surface, on the bottom of an excavation at a given depth, or on the bottom of a pre-bored large-diameter borehole — whichever matches the founding level you are designing to.
Scope
Where it applies
The test is applicable in all soils, fills and rocks. It is normally not suitable for very soft cohesive soils, where settlement continues well past the practical duration of the test and the result would mislead you.
