Grouting
Eight grouting methods for strengthening and sealing rock, soil and concrete. Most of our dam work is curtain and consolidation grouting; the rest depends on what the hole tells us.

What grout is
A mixture that hardens where you need it.
Grout is generally water, cement and sand — often with colour tint, and sometimes fine gravel where it is filling the cores of concrete blocks. It goes in as a thick emulsion and hardens over time, much like mortar.
On a dam, the purpose of a grout curtain is to restrict seepage to a level that does not lose you storage, does not dislodge the foundation downstream, and does not erode the base of the structure.
Types
Eight methods
- Stage grouting
- Treats zones individually by grouting successively increasing depths, after sealing the upper zones.
- Curtain grouting
- Grout injected in a broad line to act as a barrier to subsurface water flow — safeguarding the foundation against erodibility and cutting seepage.
- Contact grouting
- Filling voids at the contact between two zones of different material, for example between a concrete tunnel lining and the surrounding rock.
- Consolidation grouting
- Fluid grout, usually portland cement and sand, injected into a compressible soil mass to displace it and form a supporting structure.
- Pressure grouting
- Injection into isolated pore or void space whose configuration and volume are unknown. Grout may be cementitious, resinous or a solution chemical mixture.
- Permeation grouting
- Fills cracks and voids in soil and rock, permeating granular soils with flowable grouts to create a cemented mass.
- Jet grouting
- Stabilising fluid injected into the subsoil at high pressure and velocity. Stabilisation occurs as the grouted fluid hardens within the soil.
- Polyurethane grouting
- A special polyurethane chemical for immediate stoppage of seepage. Available in gel, paste and liquid form.
